What Causes Rising Damp?


You can know you have a rising damp problem once you notice staining on the lower part of your wall near the skirting board. Your floor boards and skirting boards will begin to rot and plastering may have fluffy salt deposits which come from the wall. Your walls may also have mold stains which normally appear as dark spots. Rising damp happens when the home does not have a damp proof course or if it has one that is not effective.

A damp proof course can become ineffective due to aging or if it was not properly installed. The damp proof course is made up of a water resistant membrane which is placed near the concrete floor on the internal wall or under a raised timber floor. This membrane prevents water from rising up the building.

Other Causes Of Rising Damp

If your DPC is in good condition and you are still experiencing rising damp, it is important to check the ground that is next to your external wall. It could be that the ground level next to the external wall has been raised above the level of the DPC thus enabling water to continue rising up the wall. It could also be that a driveway or stairway has been constructed outside the building and is soaking in water which then moves to the building.

The source of rising damp in a building can easily be misdiagnosed and you, therefore, need to call in an experienced expert. The expert will be able to identify the source of the rising damp and recommend a method that will immediately stop the moisture from rising up the building. The expert will confirm that the building has a DPC which is normally visible as a line at least six inches above the ground. He will ensure that the level of the ground next to the external wall is not above the DPC and if it is, action will be taken to lower this level.
